2024 Dodge Hornet
2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale

Safety

The Hornet has standard Active Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Tonale doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the Hornet and the Tonale have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available around view monitors and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

Dodge’s powertrain warranty covers the Hornet 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Alfa Romeo covers the Tonale. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Tonale ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 17 times as many Dodge dealers as there are Alfa Romeo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Hornet’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Dodge vehicles are better in initial quality than Alfa Romeo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Dodge first in initial quality, above the industry average. With 3 more problems per 100 vehicles, Alfa Romeo is ranked third.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Dodge vehicles are more reliable than Alfa Romeo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Dodge above average in long-term dependability. With 26 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Alfa Romeo is rated below average.

Engine

The Hornet R/T’s standard 1.3 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 3 more horsepower (288 vs. 285) and 33 lbs.-ft. more torque (383 vs. 350) than the Tonale’s 1.3 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Hornet GT’s standard fuel tank has 2.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the Tonale (13.5 vs. 11.2 gallons).

Transmission

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Dodge Hornet, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a six-speed automatic is available for the Tonale.

Tires and Wheels

The Hornet offers an optional space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Tonale; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

For greater off-road capability the Hornet R/T has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Tonale (6.1 vs. 5.6 inches), allowing the Hornet to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Hornet GT’s minimum ground clearance is 2.5 inches higher than on the Tonale (8.1 vs. 5.6 inches).

Chassis

The Dodge Hornet may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs up to about 400 pounds less than the Alfa Romeo Tonale.

Cargo Capacity

The Hornet has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Tonale with its rear seat up (27 vs. 22.9 cubic feet). The Hornet has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Tonale with its rear seat folded (54.7 vs. 50.5 cubic feet).

Payload

The Hornet has a higher maximum payload capacity than the Tonale (1245 vs. 1197 lbs.).
